Unreal Engine 3 up and running on webOS, and we’ve got video!
about 22 hours ago - No comments

Palm just showed us the Unreal Engine 3 running on webOS, which apparently took a couple weeks to port over to the platform using that fancy new PDK. It runs at a pretty smooth clip, with just a tiny bit of artifacting in our enemy’s death animation. As an added bit of wow factor, Palm has it currently setup to demonstrate the game at 1 fps when in card view. Like most touchscreen shooters, this doesn’t really solve the problem of simulating dual analog sticks, but it’s still a fun and good looking engine for a mobile device. We’re still unaware of any games that have been built for the mobile engine, which has now been shown for iPhone, Tegra 2, and will be headed to the iPad as well, but we have to assume we’ll be seeing some before too long. Check out the webOS video after the break.

Barnes & Noble promises B&N eReader app for iPad near launch
about 1 day ago - No comments
Need a bit more evidence that the e-book download business is a whole lot different than the music download business? Then look no further than Barnes & Noble, which has just announced that it plans to make its B&N eReader app available for the Apple iPad “around the time” of the device’s launch. Details are otherwise a bit light, but the app will be free, and is apparently “designed specifically” for the iPad, giving you access to all of the books, magazines and newspapers available in Barnes & Noble’s eBookstore. Could a Kindle app be far behind?

Apple and Nokia Case Put on Hold Pending ITC Investigation
about 3 days ago - No comments
Nokia and Apple may want to go toe to toe in the legal ring right now, but they’re being told to wait a bit.
According to Macworld, the International Trade Commission has told both parties that it must complete its own probe, which was scheduled to take 45 days after it agreed to perform the investigation on February 22nd, then the lawsuit will presumably move forward. That’s if it’s still on and not settled by then, although Nokia seems determined to win it, and Apple apparently has enough bandwidth to handle two lawsuits at once.
Just Because: 8-Bit Style Map Of New York City
about 3 days ago - No comments
8bitnyc is a fully interactive map of New York City that lets you drag, search and zoom in and out just like Google Maps. Except it is displayed as an 80’s style 8-bit video game map. The map was created using map data from OpenStreetMap.
Why? Who cares. I love it.
Creator Brett Camper says “I created 8-Bit NYC, mixing the lo-fi overhead world maps of 1980s role-playing and adventure games with the kind of geographical data that drives today’s web maps and GPS navigation. It’s interactive (like Google Maps), letting you zoom from a view of the whole city, down to an individual street — any address, anywhere in the city. Here are a few highlights: Central Park, Greenwich Village, World Trade Center.”
Jobs Confirms iPhone Will Not Allow Internet Tethering to iPad
about 4 days ago - No comments
You’ve got to hand it to Steve Jobs: he cuts to the point, even if the truth hurts a bit. Over the weekend, Apple CEO Steve Jobs tersely confirmed that Apple’s upcoming iPad will not be able to connect to the Internet via tethering on the iPhone. The confirmation came through email after Swedish DJ Jezper Söderlund asked if it would be possible.
Per 9 to 5 Mac, the transcript of the e-mail and its reply follows below:

Uh-oh: Looks Like The Nexus One Has Glitchy Multi-touch (Video)
about 1 week ago - No comments

Uh oh.
On at least a few occasions, Android developers have mentioned to me that the multi-touch sensors on certain Android handsets — especially the Nexus One — seemed a bit.. flaky. I’d had nothing but solid experiences while dabbling with multi-touch in all of the apps I could find that support it, so I chalked it up as a coding error on the developer’s part until something a bit more solid came forward.
Well, something a bit more solid has just come forward.

Existing Investors Put Another $1.5 Million Into bit.ly
about 1 week ago - No comments

Bit.ly, the biggest link shortening service around, just raised another modest $1.5 million in convertible debt from all of its existing investors on a pro rata basis, including betaworks, Jeff Clavier’s SoftTech, Ron Conway, Mitch Kapor, Chris Sacca, Howard Lindzon, and O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures. The funding amount appeared in a new SEC filing and I confirmed it with betaworks CEO and bit.ly president John Borthwick. “Everybody round the table wanted to put in more money,” he says. “No one wanted to let anyone else in.”
The round was structured as a convertible note because it was faster to do it that way, says Borthwick. He also gave me a quick update on bit.ly. Last month, 2.7 billion short bit.ly links were clicked on, with last week being the biggest ever (744 million short links clicked). As the realtime Web grows, so does bit.ly
